Police find no evidence of Madeleine's body following tip-off

Police in Portugal have ended their search of an area of scrubland for missing British girl Madeleine McCann undertaken after a tip-off received by a Dutch newspaper.

Portuguese police said this afternoon they had no plans to further search the scrubland where a report said the body of missing British girl Madeleine McCann could be buried.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf published an anonymous letter yesterday saying the four-year-old's body could be found "under branches or stones" nine miles from the Algarve resort where she disappeared from her bedroom early last month.

"For now, we have no concrete plans to enter the terrain [again]," police chief inspector Olegario de Sousa said today. "Like all the leads we receive, we will check it out thoroughly."

A spokesman for the local GNR police, which handles day-to-day policing, said they had received no request from the investigative police, who are in charge of the investigation, for help or to bring sniffer dogs to the area.

A spokesman for Madeleine 's parents said police were examining the letter to verify whether it was authentic.

The police have received many leads in their investigation, including a possible sighting of Madeleine in Morocco, but have so far made no arrests and have identified only one suspect in their case.

Madeleine disappeared from her bed while her parents dined at a nearby restaurant in the small Praia da Luz Algarve resort.

Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have undertaken a high-profile campaign to draw attention to her disappearance, including meeting the Pope in Rome and winning support from personalities such as David Beckham.

Mr McCann said in the diary he publishes online (www.findmadeleine.com) he was upset by De Telegraaf publishing the letter, saying it should have been passed on to Portuguese police before publication.

Tourists claim Madeleine sighting in Malta

VALLETTA, Malta (di-ve news)--June 21, 2007 -0945CEST--Two tourists have claimed they might have spotted Madeleine McCann in Malta.

The newspaper In-Nazzjon reported on Thursday that the police received two reports saying that they saw a blonde girl who looked just like the four-year-old in Valletta last Saturday.

The police conducted an intensive search in the streets of Valletta and even tightened security arrangements at the Malta International airport (MIA) and at other entry and exit points. Posters of Madeleine McCann were attached at each visible point at the MIA.

The toddler Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal on 03 May 2007.

Family of missing Madeleine McCann will release 2500 balloons this Friday in 50 different towns and cities around the world including Malta to mark the 50th day since her abduction.

The family has been planning the publicity stunt to raise awareness of their campaign.

Madeleine McCann, a four-year-old British girl who has been missing since the 3rd of May might have been sighted in Malta by two tourists in Valletta. The young girl was kidnapped from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve, Portugal.

Maltese Police are presently investigating the sighting. The tourists told the Police that the young girl they saw looked remarkably similar to the young missing child.

According to In-Nazzjon, an official report was filed with the Police on Saturday.

After a search in Valletta, which resulted in the negative, stricter controls in all of Malta’s departure points were ordered. Meanwhile, Police were ordered to carry out intensive searches in various Maltese towns and cities, mainly those hosting large numbers of tourists.

In-Nazzjon also reported that photographs of the young girl have been distributed to Police and Officials working at the Maltese airport and ports.

Madeleine McCann turned four on the 12th of May.

Her parents Kate and Gerry have been searching for their daughter ever since she went missing. The girl's parents have searched for her in Morocco as well as Portugal, from where Madeleine went missing. At the end of May they also met with Pope Benedict XVI where they spoke about the girl's disappearance. The couple has also made numerous media appeals in a bid to find the child.

A BRITISH tourist told last night how he saw a child resembling Maddie McCann in Malta and heard an Arab-looking man tell her in English: Get up, little girl.

Ray Roberts, 49, was in Sliema when he saw the girl wearing what appeared to be a jet black wig.

She was out late at night with the man, in his 40s, and a younger woman. When the child tripped, the man who was grasping her arm barked at her in broken English: Get up, little girl. The couple then ran off up a side street with her.

The sighting is one of FIVE independent reports by witnesses convinced they have seen kidnapped Maddie, four, in Malta.

Dad-of-two Ray, a heating engineer from Anglesey, North Wales, said: It was very late and there werent a lot of people around.

This couple walked by with a little girl, an Arabic-looking man in his 40s and a younger woman.

The girl tripped on the pavement and he said, Get up, little girl. It was obviously not his first language, so it seemed odd that he had to speak to her in English.

As a father, their reaction did not seem natural. They didnt comfort her or call her by her name, the man just called her little girl. He was holding her arm.

Then I noticed the little girls hair. It was pitch black, very thick and cut in an unusual style for a child that age very much like a wig rather than real hair.

It also seemed odd to see such a young girl out late at night. They were strange it just jarred.

Ray was on holiday with wife Norma, 48, when he saw the group at 11.30pm on Sunday. Norma had left him to finish his drink in a taverna and he was returning alone to their hotel.

Ray added: The more I think about what I saw, the more convinced I become that it may well have been Maddie. The oddness of it all played on my mind until I got home, then I realised I had to do something.

Ray and Norma have since given statements before investigating magistrate Miriam Haymann.

She has been appointed to oversee an inquiry in Malta sparked by the five possible sightings.

The first was in the capital Valletta last Saturday by a British couple who told authorities they had seen a blonde girl they believed to be Maddie with suspicious adults.

They took the unusual step of testifying before a local judge.

Rays sighting was on Sunday, and was reported to police after he returned home on Wednesday.

Last night it emerged police had been informed of three more sightings on Wednesday and yesterday.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Cassar confirmed Maltas police are taking the reports very seriously.

The search is being led by the vice squad, who are liaising with Interpol. A police source added: If Madeleine is on this island we are determined to find her.

After the first sighting, police carried out a street search, then launched intensive hunts in other parts of the island. They are understood to be concentrating on two tourist areas St Georges Bay and Rivera Martinique.

The hunt raises new hope for Madeleines parents Gerry and Kate 50 days after she was taken from her bedroom during a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

Today Gerry and Kate, from Rothley, Leics, will mark the 50 days by releasing balloons on the beach in Praia da Luz.

Gerry said: We are delighted with the response to the balloon launch, which will truly be a global event. In Southern California, 50 white doves will be released and in Afghanistan kite racing, an activity banned under the Ta****n, will be the order of the day.
