Try using English around the house with your family. Also, reading helps a lot.

Plus obviously, know your literature. Search the internet for character analysis, themes, etc regarding your book. There are a couple of good sites around for both 21 Short Stories and Of Mice and Men

i think the word 'teacher' is used for both male and female lecturers :P
