HL2 making me cry

So i'm trying to nstall hl2 for my bro and using my steam account. But to load the game it says it has to be online. I put it on offline mode but the does not load hl2. Wtf do you need inet for hl2?? am i missing something.

btw cant you just connect the pc to the net temporarily and activate everything? afterwards everything should be fine working ofline
