View Full Version : Wii & Monitor

Ok, I started the thread again after I did my research.
So, first things first, I need a monitor and cables (if necessary) to which I can connect my PC, and for when I buy my Wii. Therefore I cannot settle with a TV, because I need to connect my PC also.
I checked the Internet, because it loves me, and it told me that there are RGB to DVI cables NOT licenced by Nintendo. However I don't know about there performance, if anyone else has some contributions I would greatly appreciate.
Regards to the monitor, I am looking for a Widescreen, however I do know know what HDMI or HD Ready really is. Are they monitor specifications, or only TV?
Thank you in advance

pirvy's reply which was very helpful:
dont bother spending money on a monitor for the wii for the following reasons :
1. Wii does not have VGA output - you will need a Component output cable and A Component-To-VGA convertor. I just went this way since i already have the TFT and it cost circa 48 sterling from ebay.
2. Wii only supports 480p, so if you spend the same money on an LCD TV as opposed to a monitor, you will get roughly the same resolution but a much much bigger size. Monitors are always mch more expensve than their equivalent in TVs
Also careful where you buy from, I just bought my wii from ebay and it cost Lm127 including Wii Play (+ extra controller/ games) so stay away from local shops who charge much more.

better only at graphics...
if you don't appreciate gameplay and ... wait for it... the point of gaming... FUN... you get the other 2...
if you like gameplay and having fun... something most people don't appreciate... you'd get a WII!!!

on the monitor side, i havent 'experienced' hdmi, however my gut feeling is that it will not be any different than DVI. Mainly because the max resolution of DVI is greater than what most 20/22" monitors can support anyway - so i probably given the choice between better brand with no hdmi VS cheaper brand + hdmi i'd probably go for the better brand
on the wii side, it outputs 480p at max res which is equivalent to DVD quality (720x480 res) so you are already way over this.
The only way it might be useful is if you are interested in getting a more visually advanced console like the ps3 which outputs hdmi and you can connect it directly.
Having said that, if HDMI is not more expensive then by all means better with than without it :)
btw for the wii it would be even better if you find a monitor which has component input. Component supports up to 1080p anyway which is super high def, also you save the $60 the vga box costs

the dell 2007wfp is one of the few pc monitors which supports component input and even scales a tv aspect ratio perfectly onto the monitor. i primarily bought it for connecting my x360 infact. i got it for lm200

I'm looking at the Samsung Syncmaster 215TW because it accepts composite and S-Video Input. Any other ideas?
Who is the local retailer for Samsung?

what do you think about it? From what I understood it has all the inputs I need, however I'm not sure about the computer resolution being 1024x768. Confused! :S

Anyone know a good deal on a TV/ LCD TV?

i hated scan as much as u did d00d. Before I had ram that didn't work, they had given me a broken X-Clio case. But now I'm actually fine with them. I bought an MSI laptop which is still working from now (1 year old), a Canon Printer, an LG 19" Widescreen and an MSI Router. s'issa no problem, they improved "naqra". Plus it's not that i have total confidence in their service, i have total confidence in the product and LG never let me down.

I've been through a number of routers and the MSI ones are the best.. I buy them for anyone who needs a network at home.
I never had SCAN screw me, actually quite the other way round they had even replaced my laptop because of a small defect the model had in the battery. Can't complain about them as everything i bought still works
The shops I refuse to buy from are New Millenium (screws up everyone on anything) and AtoZ (tried to convince me that the WiFi router they sold would have a strong signal over 3 floors.. right).
