Radiohead have announced the release dates for their new album titled 'In Rainbows'. You will be able to buy a boxed copy on December 3rd but - and here comes the good news - you can download a digital version of it on 10th October (that is 8 days from now) and PAY AS MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS YOU WANT for it. Yes you can download it for free legally if you so desire. Radiohead ended their contract with their record label and have decided to release this album on their own. Visit www.inrainbows.com to pre order both the boxed version or digital version. Now excuse me as I proceed to undress and run naked in the streets for the next couple of days....
And here is what the record labels are saying in this article by time.com (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1666973,00.html)
While many industry observers speculated that Radiohead might go off-label for its seventh album, it was presumed the band would at least rely on Apple's iTunes or United Kingdom-based online music store 7digital for distribution. Few suspected the band members had the ambition (or the server capacity) to put an album out on their own. The final decision was apparently made just a few weeks ago, and, when informed of the news on Sunday, several record executives admitted that, despite the rumors, they were stunned. "This feels like yet another death knell," emailed an A&R executive at a major European label. "If the best band in the world doesn't want a part of us, I'm not sure what's left for this business."

The album was out yesterday and I have not stopped listening to it since.
I believe it is one of Radiohead's best albums although not as great as Ok Computer but I do not think anyone can ever do a better album, not even Radiohead. It may not contain the best Radiohead songs ever but it is cohesive and feels right as an album, forcing you to hear it from start to finish without ever urging you to skip any particular track.
The only track that let me down is Videotape. They played this song live various times but the version in the album is slightly different and I feel it lost some edge as an album closer. Still, I am warming up to it the more I listen. Having said that there is no filler in this album. There are only 10 tracks but the band makes them count. I guess releasing the other material on a second cd was a clever move which helped making this album sound like a whole.
Definitely an album which requires repeated listening so its hard to say how it will ultimately compare to other Radiohead albums but I reckon that this piece of work will be remembered for reasons other than the novel way in which it was distributed.

Ok, if you read the original post you will see that Radiohead released the album themselves with no record label and they took donations for the digital download version. Every single penny they get they will get themselves.
@hex4: My money made a difference to them when combined with the money of other fans. If everyone reasoned the way you do I guarantee you that there would be no music/film/games industry to speak of. Thank God for fans who deem it worthy to buy the original product of artists/actors/developers they love.
@Posthuman: Looked for it on torrents myself - figured that if I had preordered and was going to get the original electronically I might as well get a preview. Could not find a copy until the day of release. Maybe you have better sources maybe not. Even reviews started pouring yesterday, a whole 24 hours after the album was released - because reviewers did not get any special preview copy. Anyways you got one right - album is technically free. You can download it on the official Radiohead website without spending a single penny or giving away credit card details.
@Markdelf - Get hold of the new album cause its something special. I am listening to it right now for the 30th time in 2 days and still do not feel the urge to skip any track.

This is different because its from Radiohead - which is regarded as one of the most influential bands of our time. Also the album came out to download for free before it was sold for money. Even Prince's last album, which was distributed with the Mail On Sunday, required you to purchase the newspaper.
And just for the record I am not making a big deal out of it. Just pointing it out for those who might be interested in the music. What I would make a big deal about is how good this album actually is.

I just cannot pick one. The album definitely needs repeated listening as with all RH albums.
