It's official: Bungie branches off from Microsoft

Just goes to show you, never say never.

Bungie has just announced that they've "reached an unprecedented and exciting agreement" that they'll "branch off" from the Microsoft Game Studios mothership and become Bungie, LLC, an independent company, starting ... today (well, technically October 1, but effective immediately)! Worried about Halo going to another, less competent developer? No need, the studio will retain a long-term publishing agreement with Microsoft Game Studios for Halo titles. Other titles? All they're saying is that they "will continue to develop with [their] primary focus on Microsoft's platforms." With Microsoft holding a minority equity interest in the company, that's not surprising.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft is also retaining ownership of the Halo property (MGS chief Shane Kim calls it "our Halo entertainment property") as well as reserving first crack at publishing any Bungie-developed IP. We're left wondering if Marathon counts as a Halo property or a Bungie property ...

What are the immediate repercussions of this division? According to Bungie, "Practically speaking, nothing has changed and you guys won't see much, if any difference, for a while ...." We hope it means that somehow they'll be able to bring the same level of skill to a project besides Halo.

[Update: GameDaily spoke with Bungie's Frank O'Connor about the "evolution" which, he says, has been in the planning stages for "about a year." He confirms they're not through with Halo yet; they're still working on the Peter Jackson project and DLC for Halo 3. As for Marathon, despite its close ties to the Halo universe, Bungie retains the rights to that property, while MS owns Halo and Take-Two owns Myth and Oni.]

Even though Bungie 'divorced' MS, MS still have a part of it. Bungie just wants to make mac games tbh.

dude he is giving you facts man coz he is interested in this scene . why do you think most of us talk to billy when it comes to pc problems or whatever. because "HE KNOWS" the shit. It just as you like body building billy likes pc's consoles and anything related to that particular subject. And like neo said there is a lot of money involved insuch deals and ppl are easily swayed when a lot of that is waved in front of their face .

thing is as avaloner said, bungie may have left microsoft, but microsoft still hsa rights on halo 1, 2 & 3, so forget ull play halo3 on ps3. you will play bungie future games on ps3, but not halo3 for sure

Bungie: We're already at work on another Halo game, Halo 3 wasn't the last

Bungie's Community Leader Brian Jarrard has revealed that Bungie are already at work on another Halo game, but strictly speaking it is not Halo 3 but is based on the Halo universe and is a collaboration between Bungie and Peter Jackson. Jarrard simply stated that Halo 3 was definitely not the last Bungie Halo game. Moreover, he tried to dodge a question about how they would pitch future titles as they are an independent company which suggests that such a title could actually go multi-platform.

Edit: Ah I looked up & it's called Halo Wars, but developed by Ensemble Studios not Bungie.

i did not say billy is a fanatic i said he biased because if you note the words he uses he has never commented about all the problems the 360(to my knowledge)(one little comment is hardly a post) has but always seems to be on hand to label the ps3 just the best bluray player.
am i the only one who notices the words used? for 360 its all smart ass/Saviour of the world type whilst for ps3 its relatively uninteresting or just crappy.

excuse me but lemme put my 2 cents in d middle... I know the way billy reasons quite well and the way he looks at things is completely unbiased, he only pulls himself to one side after evaluating all facts, carefully analyzing all the details and tidbits to the maximum extent humanely possible.
I can also tell you that i think in the same way and ANY person which evaluates all the facts will tell you that in the majority of departments the 360 wins over the PS3... so there is a reason why we seem biased kapixxx?
