I am in the process of considering to buy a widescreen lcd/plasma, however was talking to a friend of mine and told me that because of the widescreen sometimes he has problems with subtitles.

When the subtitles are positioned only on the black border on the movie, and not on the picture, he only sees half of the subtitles, since the black border is much narrow on a widescreen obviously

Does anyone have any further info about the issue ?? For me its very important because a movie without subs is not complete for me.

never had any problems with viewing subtitles on my widescreen tv at all. maybe your friend is stretching the aspect ratio of the dvd in order to fit the whole screen?

Anyone zooming ''in'' on widescreen should be shot & beaten. Go knows what extremes the final cut was to end up with a WS release.

That said, as Sean said, subtitles can be shifted anywhere, although keeping the subtitles on the lower black border of the movie is an advantage imho!
